Project 1: Responding to Heidegger

       

       In Martin Heidegger's essay "The Question Concerning Technology", he investigates a "free relationship" between human and technology. One of his ideas is to seek the true meaning of essence. Heidegger is not only find out the trend of technology-dominated and its negative consequences, but also foresees people and all the things face a potential danger. People are dominated by producer and developer and become more dependent on technology's capabilities. Technology makes the world in order, but it maybe destroys some field. For example, human continually exploit the earth's resources that disrupt natural ecological order and increase natural disasters worldwide. Many species have been extirpated from the earth. Heidegger's insightful speculation profoundly reveals the essence of technology.

       Heidegger points out that some individual views and opinions have been abandoned up in the development of the rule of technology because the use of machine and machine production are not the technology itself, the nature of technology as a means to suit to technology in the implementation process of technology's ingredient object. He proposes two definitions of technology which are "technology is a means to an end" and "technology is a human activity". The two definition as a whole and they are the instrumental and anthropological definitions. He talks about enframing and indicates that essence is the threat of technology because "the rule of enframing threatens man with the possibility that it could be denied to him to enter into a more original revealing and hence to experience the call of a more primal truth". Human do not have the capability of finding truth and revealing.

       Land art is abstract and placed in a natural environment, which is developed by the minimalism. The visual form of land art is the combination of human and nature. Land art artists use natural materials such as water, soil, tree, grass, leaves, branch, and rock to change the original landscape. is appealing to people to have paid more and more attention to the environmental quality because of the underlying dangers brought by the urbanization and industrialization. It advocates the idea of harmonious co-existence with nature, and human are not the master of nature any more. It enlightens the thinking from the people and takes the important on protection of natural resources. Heidegger says that the essence of technology is in a lofty sense ambiguous. He states:"concerning the constellation in which revealing and concealing, in which the coming to presence of the truth comes to past" Heidegger advocates people to see the world as it is and as it reveals itself. For this assignment, I create a boat in order to express a kind of beauty between human and nature. I want to let audience realizes the importance of water because water is very precious for desert area and people should have more desire and ability to protect the environment.
